Ever wondered what the government thought about self balancing scooters? Self Balancing Scooters are considered segways, despite them being hands free. The segways are currently being regulated as a consumer product under the U.S. consumer Product Safety Commission. Each state has its own regulations pertaining to the segways, some even have local regulations! 45 states and the District of Columbia have allowed the use of the h-wheel under “personal assistive mobility devices”. Five states have not addressed the hands free h-wheel on pedestrian areas, which are Arkansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, North Dakota, and Wyoming. Majority of the states that allow the handsfree h-wheel are lenient in their laws however there have been some states that require safety measures based on what the manufacturer’s suggestions are for safety equipment. There may also be different speed limits based on different states due to the fact that segways were designed for maximum speeds of 12.5 mph. Some states limit segways to specific areas to use such as bicycle paths, sidewalks and etc. These regulations and laws are created to ensure the safety of responsible users.
